Synopsis

27-year-old, highly sensitive marine biologist Kurt, who suffers from Marfan syndrome, resorts to matricide after having been rejected by the Shark School in L.A. - an oneiric place, where he planned to escape the smothering care of his mother. On the online platform Youtube Kurt launches an uncompromising appeal for strength - he presents his sick body as tool and canvas. The progressive deterioration of his physical condition, however, prevents the execution of his acts without help. Conny, a 12-year-old runaway, and Dina, 36, an ex-bodybuilder from L.A. grant Kurt access to their extreme and different worlds. They turn into a surrogate family which feeds off Kurt's disease, Conny's pain and Dina's loss, but which finally chokes on their collective utopia. Kurt fights like Sisyphos, ignores his condition and crosses his physical limits. High on his dream of a reckless life, Kurt, running inner amok, finally falls victim to his dream.

About the Marfan-Syndrome

Marfan syndrome is a genetive disorder of the connective tissue. Connective tissue constitutes the „framework“ of every organ and lends stability to the body. A variety of fibers within the connective tissue grant firmness and flexibility. The actual components of the fibers are the so-called microfibrils. People suffering from Marfan syndrome have too few or defective microfibrils, thus the connective tissue is weak and only insufficiantly fulfills its important supportive function. Since connective tissue can be found almost everywhere in the body the weaknes caused by Marfan syndrome can have a range of expressions. Most commonly affected are the skeleton, the heart and the blood vessels, the eyes, lungs, skin and muscles. The combination and occurence of the characteristics and symptoms are specific for each person. Some patients show no or only minor discomfort for a long time, others are already heavily affected from their infancy. There is no cure for Marfan syndrome. The main threat – and the most common cause of death – is the expansion of the aorta. This risk can be minimized by regular check ups and also, in some cases, by preventive surgery.
